Understanding Oppression Paper

This assignment will further develop your understanding of your own oppression and how it is linked to oppression with others and within the community. You will also further develop your self reflection skills and your understanding of how you can effectively challenge your oppression. Then, you can become a strong ally with clients and oppressed community members as well as oppressive practises with a view to effecting positive change.

After reading the Bishop textbook please consider and answer the following questions:

a). Review and summarise the course and Bishop’s definition of oppression,

including classism, racism, ageism, ableism, sexism and heterosexism.

b). According to the above definitions, explain how you have experienced each component of oppression. Please also record any systemic disadvantages that you have experienced.

c). How has your oppression affected how you think, your world view and how you feel about yourself, as well as your relationships with people who experienced the same type of oppression as you. Please describe how you relate with people who have experienced different types of oppression than yourself? Please use two examples of barriers that you have faced as a result of oppression e.g education, housing, employment, social life.

b). Specifically, how are you an oppressor or advantaged compared to others. Please

note the systemic advantages that you experience(d) for each component of oppression.

c). Please record how your membership in groups which are systemically advantaged such as race, gender, etc., has affected your world view, how you think about yourself and others, as well as how you feel about others. Please provide at least two examples of your systemic advantages in education, employment, housing, social life.

Referring to Chapter five of Bishop’s book, please answer the following questions

and include personal examples:

a). How are the forms of oppression that you experience similar to other forms of oppression which you do not experience directly?

b). How are the forms of oppression that you experience different from the forms of oppression which you do not experience directly?

c). Is there a common ground/feature/element of class oppression that you share with most people including clients of social service agencies? If yes, what is it?

a). Discuss the changes that you would make while working toward liberation from the oppressions you experience.
