Personal Agency – Emerging Adulthood

Personal Agency – Emerging Adulthood

Historically, early adulthood spanned from approximately 18 (the end of adolescence) until 40 to 45 (beginning of middle adulthood). More recently, developmentalists have divided this age period into two separate stages: Emerging Adulthood and Early Adulthood (Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). In preparation for Early Adulthood next unit, we’re going to focus on personal agency in emerging adulthood.

Please listen/view How to Be an adult – and How to Raise One (linked in unit).  Then consider the following questions and write a comprehensive post in response to the same:

  • What is the value of agency to an individual in emerging adulthood?
  • Why is the use of the term agency vs independence important? (hint, think culture)
  • “Children have the right to dream for themselves” – Talk about this in relation to emerging adulthood (hint, use James Marcia and Erikson as you talk about this) and share how this statement resonates with your experience.
