Advanced Exercise Physiology
EHS 6510-Fall 2024 Research Paper 1
Instructions
- Conduct a search for peer-reviewed research articles related to metabolism or cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory physiology and exercise/physical activity/sport on a topic that is of interest to you. Check tips on how to do your Physiology Assignment.
- This can be done via Google Scholar, PubMed, etc.
- If you are unsure if your topic fits, feel free to email it me first.
- Select five articles that are related to your area of interest published within the last 5 years.
- These can be training studies, basic research, longitudinal research, etc.
- The goal is to find a common theme
- Based on those five articles, you will present a summary of the findings as a whole
- I do not want five separate summaries of each article but a synthesis of information into 1-3 paragraphs from each of the five articles.
- Based on the summary of information you have presented, how can you use the information practically? If you want to be an exercise physiologist, how would you use this information? If you want to be a strength coach, how would you use this information? How will you apply this to your own personal interests? This can be for another clinical role you would like to have in the future as well. This is meant to be related to your specific interests.
Advanced Exercise Physiology
Example:
- I am interested in the energy contribution and metabolic demands of women’s soccer during competition.
- I am going to search for the following with some form of women’s soccer included:
- Aerobic energy contribution
- Lactate production
iii. Oxygen consumption
- Glycogen depletion
- Glycogen synthesis
- Anaerobic energy
From there, I am going to identify five articles that help me learn more about the area of energy contribution and metabolic demands.
- Synthesize the overall findings from those articles into 1-2 paragraphs
- I will start by summarizing each of them separately but then combining similar concepts and findings into 1-3 paragraphs (not just copy/paste) but identifying common themes/findings from the articles
- From these findings, I will explain how this information can be used to make a more informed decision about the training and potential nutrition recovery strategies for the athletes that I work with

Grading
Introduction: Provide a brief description of why you are interested in this topic. This can be related to personal or professional interests. This should provide the justification for you wanting to do research in this area. The goal is to show your interest/passion in this topic! (20 points)
Summary/Synthesis: Synthesize the overall findings from those articles into 1-3 paragraphs based on common themes. I want to see how you connect the dots from different research articles. (50 points)
Practical Application: Based on the information found in the articles, you are able to make practical summaries of what you have learned and how you can apply this information. You should learn something new! Nobody knows everything. Don’t just search for information that you know. Try to find something new or at least a scientific confirmation as to why something is recommended that you did not know before. (20 points)
References: Formatting and references should be in either one of two formats: APA or AMA. These are the most commonly used reference formats within our professions. Links to APA and AMA references are found below. (10 points).
