CYC Needs Assessment Task

CYC Needs Assessment Task

The purpose of this assignment is to support you generating ideas for the Program Proposal assignment (see the assignment package for details). This needs assessment is the first step toward the overall assignment; consider it a draft assessment.

For this assignment, you will do a preliminary search of what is currently available for the population, location, and age group of your choosing and develop a draft for an environmental scan.

Based on your interests, experiences, and awareness, you will determine a need for a specific population and age group of your choosing and develop a proposal for the program.

1) Develop a list of three (3) to five (5) ideas of what you would like to focus on for your program proposal. Include whatever you’d like in the list, the choice is yours!

2) Once you have the list, try some searches online using resources such as https://211ontario.ca or other available resources in your community of choice within Ontario. Play around with key words, review chapter 1 from your Foundations in CYC Textbook “A Tapestry of Relational Child and Youth Care Competencies” (Fraser and Ventrella, 2019) to get ideas of practice settings, populations, and what you might be interested in focusing on.

Check tips on how to do your CYC Assignment.

Make a note of what is currently available, and

What gaps you notice. What can you add/support with?

3) Choose one for each of the following (a-d):

A general need or population (e.g., social skills, specific behaviour or exceptionality, etc.)

Age group (e.g., families, children ages 6-8, adolescents, emerging adults, etc.)

Location within Ontario (e.g., community, city, region, your own or another location that you’re passionate about, etc.)

Practice Setting (e.g., mental health, hospital, school, youth justice, residential, community, etc.)

4) Based on the list you develop for question #3, choose one idea to do a deeper search.

Find a minimum of six (6) programs/groups/etc. within Ontario that may be similar.

If there is nothing available, make a note of 6 examples that are similar or related, and could be adapted or enhanced.

5) Using the posted material for this week as inspiration, summarize your findings, what you notice, what is important to highlight. Using complete sentences and paragraphs, you will describe your findings, include citations and links for each, and include a graph or image that highlights how your findings connect with your choice in question #3 (see example in this week’s slides). Include a minimum of one citation of a resource you used from this week’s content.
