We will explore the vast development that takes place during middle childhood. As with our previous lessons, there is much to learn. This period of one’s life marks an increase in autonomy, less egocentrism, and more sophisticated cognitive operations.
Friends, and the Kids Who Don’t Have Them
This discussion board is a combination journal and discussion board. We will start with the case of Emily, and then move to your exploration of the role that friendships had in during your middle childhood.
Please review the case of Emily:
Then, your initial post should respond to the following questions:
1. Emily has asked her mom to transfer her to a different middle school. Her mom contacted you as her school counselor/mental health counselor due to concerns over Emily’s falling grades and because she has been withdrawn and tearful at times. Her mom has observed how Emily has changed throughout the school year and wants to support her. How would you respond to Emily’s mom?

2. Emily’s mom hints that Emily has had struggles connecting with peers and being picked on. How may Emily’s experiences with bullying impact her ability to form friendships and develop a supportive social network?
3. How may Emily’s experiences impact how she navigates the psychosocial crisis of industry vs. inferiority and then identity versus confusion as well as her development of sense of self?
4. What programs are in your community that could help a child in Emily’s situation – not counseling or mental health, but social emotional learning programs? Be specific and describe them in detail.
5. Finally, share about your earlier friendships. How did those early relationships or lack of them, shape the development of your identity and how you navigated the psychosocial crisis of identity versus confusion?
