RACIAL TRAUMA

A black person walked into your office crying.  Between the tears, they keep saying that they just feel like giving up.  They initially reported feeling sidelined for promotion despite how hard they try to stay involved at work and to always be willing to offer extended support to their other colleagues.  They reported going back to school to upgrade their qualification requirement for the job and are the most advance person in their department but are often overlooked for job promotion.  They reported feeling like they are always training other staff who are promoted in the management role for the department even when they are overlooked.

SUICIDE

One day while you were at the office, this 28-year-old woman walked into seek your professional support because they feel overwhelmed by these emotions and suicidal thoughts they are having. The client does not have any children, resides alone in an apartment, and consumes alcohol regularly. They shared on the intake form that they have a history of child welfare involvement, moved around to several foster and group homes as a child and self-harm.  They also shared that they were currently experiencing a crisis left them feeling as thought they would be better off being dead and that they have limited friend and families for support.

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE

This client is a 32-year-old male who is living his wife and four children.  He shared with you that he recent immigrated to Ontario from the United States where he has been living and working for the past 10 years while returning to Ontario to spend holidays and special events with his family.  During the conversation, this client shared with you that he is no longer feeling comfortable in the relationship and that he feels taken advantaged of by his wife to the point where he was tempted to call the police on occasions.   He never called the police because he was concerned that they would not believe him and could mischaracterized him as the problem based on the fact that men are often seen as the abuser instead of the victim.

POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

The receptionist called your office to say there is a 25-year-old sitting in the waiting room.  The receptionist shared that they reported being assaulted two weeks ago by a group of men during a late-night walk home from their workplace place.   They reported being place on temporary sick leave and that they are fearful about not being ready to return to work in one week from now because they are still dealing with the post-assault effects on their mental and physical health.   They shared briefly that their life is like “watching a scary, suspenseful movie, anxiously waiting for something scary to happen, palms sweating, heart pounding and on the edge of your chair.”

GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT

The client who you are meeting for the first time shared on their intake form that they are experiencing a great deal of distress following the sudden death of a family member. They also reported periods of insomnia, loss of interest in nearly all daily activities, weight loss of 12 pounds in the past 3 weeks, and not returning telephone calls from family and friends.  They reported that they have been “spending majority of the day sitting on the couch with the television on without any knowledge of what is going on the television.   They have two adult children who are living outside of the family home who rarely come to visit because of the travel distance.
